Army Football Top Moments: Number 2
December 02, 2015 | Football, Athletics
WEST POINT, N.Y. - In celebration of 125 years of Army football, the Army Athletic Association is counting down the top 10 moments in program history each Wednesday during the remainder of the 2015 football season. A fan vote and a panel of athletic department officials combined to determine the list of top moments.
Number 2 - Three Heisman Trophies (Doc Blanchard 1945, Glenn Davis 1946, Pete Dawkins, 1958)
Three individuals from Army's storied football history have won college football's highest individual honor, the Heisman Memorial Trophy, given to the sport's best player.
Two of the winners have roots in Army's run of three National Championships. In 1945, Felix 'Doc' Blanchard, dubbed "Mr. Inside", dominated college football by rushing for more than 700 yards and scoring 17 total touchdowns. Blanchard helped lead Army to a 9-0 record and second straight National Championship. Blanchard also started at linebacker, in addition to being Army's placekicker and punter. A three-time consensus All-American, Blanchard also captured the Maxwell and Sullivan awards.
In 1946, a Black Knight claimed the hardware for a second straight season. This time, it was "Mr. Outside," Glenn Davis. Davis put up more than one-thousand yards from scrimmage, and scored 13 touchdowns, while throwing for four more scores and starting in the defensive backfield as the Cadets went undefeated for their third straight National Title. Davis, who won the Maxwell award two years earlier, ended his career with an average of 8.3 yards per carry, a mark that still stands today. Like Blanchard, he was a three-time consensus All-American.
Twelve years later, Pete Dawkins led an Army team that finished undefeated and No. 3 in the national polls. Dawkins racked up more than 900 yards from scrimmage, including averaging 30 yards per reception on 16 catches, and six scores through the air. Dawkins also came up big in critical moments, including scoring on a 64-yard catch-and-run in the final minute, as Army pulled out a dramatic victory at Rice.
