WEST POINT, N.Y. – In celebration of 125 years of Army football, the Army Athletic Association is counting down the top 10 moments in program history each Wednesday during the remainder of the 2015 football season. A fan vote and a panel of athletic department officials combined to determine the list of top moments.
Number 9
Army defeats Texas A&M, 24-14, in College Station, Texas, despite being a 30-point underdog (1972)
Coming off a 77-7 home defeat to Nebraska in its home opener in 1972, Army marched into Texas A&M's Kyle Field as a 30-point underdog.
Playing in front of a crowd of 46,680, coach Tom Cahill's Cadets scored 10 points in the second half to break a 14-14 halftime tie.
Senior halfbacks Bob Hines and Bruce Simpson led the Army rushing attack. Hines gained 70 yards on 23 carries and scored one touchdown, while Simpson punched in another and ran for 57 yards. Kicker Jim Barclay converted three extra points and booted a career-best 47-yard field goal to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, Army's entire unit shut down the Aggies' wishbone offense and Matt Wotell intercepted two passes, forced two fumbles and made 14 total tackles. Team captain Steve Bogosian sacked Texas A&M quarterback Lex James three times and finished with 11 stops.
