CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Army West Point women's track and field teams competed at the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational hosted by Virginia on Saturday and earned four top three finishes.
Freshman Tya'tianna Johnson placed third in the triple jump with a best jump of 11.25 meters. She was the top placing freshman at the event.
Freshmen Abby Halbrook and Cassie Mundekis also showed admirably as the best rookies in the 1500 Meters. Halbrook finished third in a time of 4:40.75 while Mundekis finished close behind in fourth with a time of 4:40.86.
The strong showing by the youngsters came despite competing in poor weather.
"They did a good job of handling things," said Army Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Mike Smith. "That's not easy for freshmen. Those three have adapted well and are doing the best they can do. They are wired to try and win."
Sophomores Meagan Hilla and Briyah Brown each placed second in their respective events. Hilla (1.65 meters) competed in the High Jump while Brown (13.64 meters) placement was in the Shot Put.
The Black Knights will return to competition next Friday and Saturday at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic.
"You have to race good people to become good and our conference has good people," stated Smith. "It will force our people to compete in a competitive environment."
