March 20, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
IRVINE, Calif. – The Army West Point women's track and field team finished fourth among the six-team field at the annual UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
"I thought our team did a nice job of competing today," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "We worked hard all week, had perfect weather and made some nice progress in a lot of areas."
Three underclassmen led the Black Knights to a trio of individual championships as freshmen distance runners Cassie Mundekis and Abby Halbrook, along with sophomore jumper Anna Motes, led by example. Mundekis captured the 800m title with a time of 2:12.84, while Halbrook bested the field in the 5000m after crossing the finish line at 17:07.68. Motes out jumped everyone in the triple jump at 11.28m.
Senior Madison Hill joined Halbrook on the podium in the 5000 in third place with a time of 17:25.76. Another young distance runner in Payton Padgett finished third in the steeplechase.
Army's deepest event was the pole vault, securing the second to fourth places. Megan Gemar led the way with 3.70m, good enough for second place, while freshmen Abby Vorhaus, who vaulted 3.40m in third, and Maddie Schneider, who cleared the bar at 3.25m, was fourth.
Freshman Whidney Desormo earned Army a second-place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 12.17. Meagan Hilla was also a runner-up in the high jump, reaching the mark of 1.65m.
In the long jump, Anna Motes leapt 5.25m, good enough for third. Cori Lemere followed behind her in the standings after a mark of 5.20m.
Briyah Brown placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 13.94m.
The Black Knights return to the track next Saturday, March 26, with a dual meet at the University of Pennsylvania.
