Army West Point Athletics

Getting to Know: Meagan Hilla
June 29, 2015 | Women's Track and Field
Each weekday this summer a new cadet-athlete will be featured in Getting to Know, a Q&A series where Army West Point fans can read about their favorite players.
NAME: Meagan Hilla
HOMETOWN: Green Bay, Wis.
MAJOR:Â philosophy or psychology
DESCRIBE YOUR HEAD COACH:Â Coach Smith has a very concrete set of goals. He maps out exactly what he wants from us. Early in the season I had a pretty bad meet and he came up to me after and said "when are you going to start jumping high." That was pretty upsetting, but he's new and I was new and I wanted to make a good impression, so I worked hard. Now he comes up to me and says "5'9" this week." It fires me up. He's pretty motivational.
WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL AND WHY: Michelle Obama—she's fierce, kind of like a political Beyonce
FAVORITE ARMY WEST POINT TEAM OTHER THAN YOUR OWN:Â War Tubas
FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY IN: The Armory—it's a crazy and humbling feeling to be in a venue where the professionals you've watched on TV and looked up to also compete in.
OPPONENT MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING:Â Navy - this year's outdoor loss was upsetting. I'm looking forward to defeating them again.
WHAT TEAM NOT ON YOUR SCHEDULE WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY AND WHY: Either U of Minnesota or UW- Madison - I have friends on both of those teams that I competed against in high school. It would be awesome to compete against them in college.
HOW ARE YOU SPENDING YOUR SUMMER: I have Air Assault school and Cadet Field Training. In between I'll get to go back home for a few weeks and hopefully travel around the Midwest a bit.
ON MY TEAM, I AM THE BEST… astrologer—that's not actually proven, but I'd like to claim the title. (I'm not sure if this is a real question and if I'm supposed to say high jumper…)
FAVORITE MEAL:Â Kielbasa with Mac & cheese
IF YOU COULD GO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO:Â I've always wanted to go to Greece. The architecture and landscape are beautiful.
FAVORITE WARMUP SONG: Big Poppa—Notorious B.I.G.
BIGGEST NIGHTMARE: Losing a permanent tooth
FAVORITE PART OF WEST POINT: Standards and discipline. No, to me it's really awesome to be doing something that not a lot of people could do. We have a lot of things on our plate—especially mentally and physically. It's not the life for everyone, so it's cool to be doing something unique. Also, I've always wanted to go to Hogwarts, so that's a plus.
DESCRIBE ARMY WEST POINT TRACK & FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY: Dedicated. It's insane how much every single person wants the victory over Navy. The emotions following the 2015 outdoor meet weren't fun, but the passion in every person there was obvious. We were all upset because of how much we wanted it. It's not just a want though—we put in the effort day in and day out. I'm so thankful to be part of such a determined team.
FAVORITE TV SHOW GROWING UP: Skins
MOST MEMORABLE ATHLETIC MOMENT: Winning high jump at Army-Navy outdoor 2015 season
HOW ARE YOU IMPROVING IN THE OFFSEASON: Focusing on eating well especially. Also lifting and doing speed work. Probably hook it up with some meditation as well.
WHO WILL SURPRISE PEOPLE NEXT SEASON: Lee Bares—the sky is the limit for him (pole vault pun). But seriously, he's extremely talented and driven.
WHO IS THE STRONGEST PLAYER ON YOUR TEAM: Anna Motes
WHO IS THE MOST ENTERTAINING PLAYER ON YOUR TEAM: Elliot "E.K." Knotts and Ernest "Uncle Ton" Holland are a pretty entertaining duo.
WHICH TEAMMATE IS MOST LIKELY TO BECOME A GENERAL: Savannah Baker (Lady Ranger)
ADVICE FOR INCOMING PLEBE TEAMMATES: Take advantage of the mandatory study halls and people on your team willing to tutor you—balancing academics and track can be tough at times.
FAVORITE PERSON TO FOLLOW ON TWITTER: Kim Kierkegarrdashian—it's a parody account that takes Kim K's tweets and combines them with Søren Kierkegaard's philosophies. They're hilarious.
