Men’s Basketball Wins Fifth Straight Game
February 23, 2016 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON – Senior Kevin Ferguson's seventh consecutive double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds led the Army West Point men's basketball team to an 80-71 victory over Boston University on Tuesday evening at Case Gym.
Army won its fifth game in a row and secured its program-record 11th road victory of the 2015-16 season. The Black Knights improved to 18-11 overall, including a 9-8 mark in Patriot League play, and will finish the regular season in the top six of the Patriot League standings.
Senior Tanner Plomb also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while classmate Kyle Wilson scored 15 and sophomore Luke Morrison added 11 points in the win. Senior point guard Dylan Cox had eight points, eight rebounds and five assists in the triumph.
Boston University (17-13, 10-7 Patriot League) was led by Eric Fanning's game-high 20 points. Cheddi Mosley netted 18 and Eric Johnson finished with 12, while Nick Havener pulled down 15 rebounds.
The Black Knights jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on a pair of baskets inside by Plomb. The Terriers scored eight of the next 10 and were within a point (9-8) on a three-point play by Kyle Foreman.
Army answered with a 10-2 run of its own, including five points by John Emezie, to force BU to call timeout at 13:26 after Emezie buried a three in transition. Cox assisted the triple as Army went ahead 19-10.
BU answered again, this time with a 9-0 burst to tie the game at 22 before Adam Roe came into the game and knocked down a corner three.
The Terriers' 19-6 run ended with a pair of free throws by Ferguson, which gave him 1,000 career points, and cut the deficit to 32-30. Moments later, Johnson hit a three on the other end (35-30), but Army closed the half on a 12-4 run and held a 42-39 lead at halftime.
Army maintained its lead by the first media timeout of the second half (48-43) as Foreman limped off with an injury and Blaise Mbargorba picked up his fourth foul. After the halt in play, Morrison hit his second three to stretch the lead to eight.
The Terriers closed the gap to two on a pair of Fanning free throws with just under 12 minutes remaining and took the 57-56 lead when Johnson hit a three a minute later.
Ferguson answered with a bucket in the paint on Army's next possession and it remained a one-possession game with Army in front 64-61 as BU called timeout at 5:26. A John Papale miss led to Cox stretching the lead to five on the ensuing trip, before Mosely's jumper made it 66-63 a minute later.
A steal by Cox and Larry Toomey's follow of a Wilson missed three pushed Army's lead back to five, but Papale made a layup with under three to go. An offensive rebound by Toomey gave Army another possession and Cox took advantage with a driving layup on the left side.
A BU miss gave the ball back to Army with less than 1:30 left, but a miss by Ferguson allowed BU to grab the carom. Haines was fouled and was off on the front end of a 1-and-1, before Wilson's layup made it 72-65 with a minute left.
Army went 8-for-8 from the free throw line to seal the eventual nine-point win.
Army's final game of the regular season is Saturday afternoon when it hosts Lehigh. The Black Knights and Mountain Hawks tip off at Christl Arena in a noon start and the game will be televised by CBS Sports Network. Army's senior class of 2016 will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
