LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior outside hitter Ariana Mankus copped All-Northeast Region honorable mention status when the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its all-region teams on Tuesday morning. This marks the first career regional honor for Mankus, who also becomes the second Division I volleyball player in West Point history to earn all-region honors.
Mankus joins former standout Jamie Clark '08 in receiving this prestigious honor. The 2012 conference Player of the Year, Mankus was the only one out of the Patriot League to earn AVCA plaudits.
"I cannot think of a better way to cap Ariana's unbelievable career," said sixth-year head coach Alma Kovaci. "She is one of the most dedicated, hard-working and dynamic players I've ever had the privilege of coaching. Her contributions to this program are far-reaching and will be felt for a very long time."
A unanimous selection first team all-league selection, Mankus became the third player in Patriot League history to be named Player of the Year multiple times after winning the title in 2009 and 2012. She was the sixth player in Army history to win the prestigious award and first to win it twice.
Mankus has started all 29 matches this fall and reached the 20-kill plateau five times. She recorded a career-best 30 kills at Colgate during the regular season, which marked the most kills by an Army player since 1990. Mankus later represented the Black Knights on the Patriot League All-Tournament Team.
A team co-captain and one of two players in program history to reach the century mark in both kills and digs, this offensive powerhouse closed her career with 1,563 kills to rank second in Army history and sixth Patriot League annals. Mankus averaged a Patriot League-best 3.67 kills per set as a senior.
Mankus' defense was equally as impressive during her four-year stay at West Point. With 1,424 career digs, she currently ranks eighth in Patriot League history and second in program history.
Army averaged nearly 22 wins per year with Mankus on the court. She helped lead the Black Knights to their first Patriot League title in 15 years as a freshman in 2009.
An Art, Philosophy and Literature major, Mankus will enter the Engineers branch of the United States Army.
