CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -
It has been quite a Tuesday for sophomore setter Mary Vaccaro. Already named the 2012 Patriot League Setter of the Year at noontime, Vaccaro garnered 2012 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors just hours later.
As voted on by the conference's sports information directors, Vaccaro is the second Army player to earn the Scholar-Athlete of the Year title in volleyball. She joins 2008 West Point graduate Briana Stremick.
Vaccaro, who also earned placement on the Academic All-Patriot League Team, carries a 3.88 grade-point average in Kinesiology. Currently on a pre-med track, she is a Dean's List member and was recently named to the Capital One All-District I First Team.
A native of Orinda, Calif., Vaccaro's 9.41 assists per set rank second in the Patriot League. She has emerged as an attacking threat as well this season, accumulating a career-high 80 kills. Vaccaro has reached the 40-assist mark nine times this season and amassed 938 on the year. She leads the team in service aces and ranks third in digs.
Vaccaro has authored 15 double-doubles this season, 14 of which came via the assists and digs column. The other came in a near triple-double as she recorded a career-high 11 kills to go with 34 assists and seven digs in a "Star Match" win over rival Navy.
Vaccaro has garnered first team All-Patriot League plaudits, along with Setter of the Year honors, in both 2011 and 2012. She also earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades last fall.
In addition to her exploits on the court, Vaccaro is a council member for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has volunteered at the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church soup kitchen. She is also a team leader within her company, which places her in charge of the physical, military and academic development of one member of West Point's plebe class.
Vaccaro and the Black Knights will make their conference record 14th-straight Patriot League Tournament appearance this weekend. Third-seeded Army will face defending champion American in Saturday's second semifinal match at 6 p.m. The winner will face either No. 1 Colgate or No. 4 Lehigh in Sunday's championship match at 3 p.m. The tournament will be played at Colgate's Cotterell Court.
