CENTERVILLE, Mass. - For the second day in a row, senior outside hitter Ariana Mankus has been rewarded for her standout performance in a pair of Patriot League wins last weekend. A day after being named the Patriot League Molten Player of the Week, Mankus picked up ECAC Division I Volleyball Player of the Week plaudits on Tuesday afternoon.
A preseason All-Patriot League pick, Mankus is the first Army volleyball player the ECAC has honored this season.
Mankus averaged 3.56 kills and 4.44 digs per set while hitting .250 to help the Black Knights to a 2-0 start to Patriot League play, including a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 win at defending champion American Friday night. She led all players with 20 kills, including three with no errors in the decisive fifth set, which Army won 15-7. The Black Knights rallied from two sets down in the contest and won at Bender Arena for the second time ever. It also marked Army's first win over American since the 2009 Patriot League Championship match.
The Lisle, Ill., native kept delivering Saturday night with 12 kills on 31 swings with just one error as the Black Knights collected their 11th-straight "Star" against Navy, 3-1.
One of the most prolific offensive players in program history, Mankus passed Sunny Barse '95 to take over second place on Army's all-time kills list with 1,368. Deann Machlan holds the record with 1,718. Mankus is one of just three players in program history to reach the century mark in both kills (1,368) and digs (1,286).
The Black Knights look to extend their current four-match win streak with a pair of Patriot League tests this weekend at Gillis Field House. Army hosts Bucknell on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. and Colgate on Saturday, Sept. 29, also at 7 p.m. Both matches will be webcast live on Knight Vision. Click here for more information.
