NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Army women’s tennis wrapped up its final tournament of the fall season on Saturday, concluding matches at the ITA Regional Championship. Hosted by Yale, the Black Knights sent four singles players and two doubles teams to the tournament.
With a pair of victories in the qualifying singles bracket, freshman Natalie Allen earned an invite into the main draw. Allen defeated Irina Dementeyava of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2, and Tristany Leikem of Rhode Island, 6-2, 6-2, to advance.
Sophomore Emily Stein also competed in the qualifying draw, defeating Albany’s Cheryl Kukkonen, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to Nina Mayevska of NJIT, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(4). Stein finished the fall season with an 8-5 record, with the eight wins tying for the team high.
In the main draw, Allen advanced with a first-round win over Rhode Island’s Pam Emery, 6-1, 6-3. She then faced 17th-seeded Vivien Laszloffy of Boston University in the Round of 64, who defeated the Army plebe, 6-4, 6-3. Allen finished her first fall at West Point with an 8-4 record, tying Stein for the team lead in wins.
Sophomore Jamila Paul also made it through the Round of 128 by defeating Fairleigh Dickinson’s Elmine Botes, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Facing 17th-seeded Lindsay Graff of Princeton, Paul’s stay in the singles bracket came to an end with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat. She finished the fall tournament schedule with a 4-4 record.
Sophomore Della Taylor rounded out Army’s singles contingent, suffering a first-round loss with a 6-1, 6-2 setback to Harvard’s Hanna Morrill. Taylor went 6-2 this fall.
In doubles play, Paul and junior co-captain Erin Colton were pitted against the top-seeded doubles pair in Harvard’s Kristin Norton and Hideka Tachibana. The Crimson duo, which finished last season ranked third in the region, defeated Colton and Paul, 8-4. The Black Knight team finished the fall season with a 0-2 record.
Taylor and younger sister freshman Elle Taylor also lost to a pair from Harvard, as Kelly Whelan and Hannah Morrill earned a tight 9-7 victory over the Army duo. The Taylor sisters recorded a team-best 8-3 doubles mark this fall.
