WEST POINT, N.Y. – Six players from the Army women’s tennis team completed the first two of five days of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Central Championships at Harvard’s Murr Tennis Center as singles qualifying rounds and doubles main draw rounds went underway on Thursday, Oct. 17, and Friday, Oct. 18.
Sophomore Eva Sung, seeded 12th in the qualifying rounds, captured a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3 victory over University of Pennsylvania’s Stephanie Do, before being eliminated in the second round (4-6, 6-4, and 6-3) by Princeton’s Caroline Joyce. Senior co-captain Jamila Paul will compete in the main draw round of 128 singles which is set to begin on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 9 a.m.
In doubles action, Paul and freshman partner Brenna Keller dispatched pairs from rivals UConn and UPenn by scores of 8-2 and 8-5, respectively, The pair seeded 31st in the draw, will face number 25-seeded Katherine Yau and Taylor Ng of Dartmouth looking to advance to the quarterfinals.
Army duo co-captain Margaret Illiev and sophomore Carolyn Pitman captured a win over URI’s tandem of Taylor Holden and Kathleen Uy, 8-4, but were eliminated in the round of 32 to UPenn’s Augustina Sol Eskenazi and Jamie Yapp-Shing, 8-1. Taylor sisters, Elle and Della partnered up as the number five seed in the round of 64 but fell to Bryant’s Marion Buollin and Ryan Brown, 8-7 (3).
Play resumes tomorrow at the Murr Tennis Center. The singles and doubles winners of the five-day tournament earn a spot in the national indoor championships at Flushing Meadows, N.Y., in November. For daily updates and a complete schedule, click here for ITA Regional Central.
