WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army women’s tennis team wrapped up the second day of its weekend tournaments on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., and the Hampton Roads/Old Dominion Invitational in Newport News, Va. The Black Knights found success in singles and doubles at Lehigh while teams only played singles in Virginia.

The Black Knights went up against Temple University in Saturday’s matches at Pennsylvania. Three Army players picked up wins in singles action, including sophomore Caroline Pitman who went three rounds (6-3, 3-6, 10-5) for a victory over Alicia Doms. Junior Elle Taylor also went three rounds with Rebecca Breland coming up with a 6-2, 6-5 (7-5) victory. Freshman Allyson Hayley rounded out the wins taking a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Carly Bohman.

In doubles action, four of five Black Knights teams advanced over Temple. Three of the winning teams including tandem of senior co-captain Margaret Iliev and Pitman, freshman duo Caroline Lorenzini and Nan Porter and teammates senior co-captain Jamila Paul and freshman Brenna Keller, all came out with an 8-4 victory over their competitors. Spindler and Hayley went up against Lehigh’s twosome of Jessica Grahm and Jill Sloard in which they came away with an 8-1 triumph.

The other half of the Black Knights competed in the first day of singles play at the Hampton Roads/Old Dominion Invitational. Sophomore Hayley O’Connor came away with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Villanova’s Allison Kuse and sophomore Eva Sung picked up a victory in the first round defeating Chowan’s Natalta Kamenschikov 6-4, 6-4. The two Army teammates then went head-to-head in the round of eight. Sung took a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over O’Connor and will move to play the East quarterfinal round on Sunday. After falling short in the round of 16, Army junior Alyssa Gleason moved onto the West bracket where she came out with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Chowan’s Jessica De Backre. Gleason will also move on in the quarterfinal round tomorrow.
