WEST POINT, N.Y.  – The Army women’s tennis team participated in two tournaments on Friday, Oct. 4, including the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., and the Hampton Road/Old Dominion Invitational in Newport, Va. The Black Knights collected wins in both tournaments and play will continue both Saturday and Sunday.

The Black Knights came out untouched with 12 wins over Lehigh’s zero on the first day of the Lehigh Invitational. In singles play, senior co-captain Jamila Paul, sophomore Carolyn Pitman, sophomore Gabrilla Spindler, senior Della Taylor, junior Elle Taylor, freshman Allison Hayley, senior co-captain Margaret Iliev and freshman Nan Porter were all victorious as none of the Black Knights gave up more than two points.

Doubles played out similarly as four teams came out with wins over Lehigh. The Taylor sisters pulled out an 8-3 triumph over Jenai Bilimord and Taylor Hampshire. Duo Iliev and Pitman swept the court in an 8-0 win over Abby Farrell and Cassidy Cruz. Army tandem Paul and Spindler and team of Hayley and Porter, each took an 8-2 win over the host teams.

In doubles action at the Hampton Roads/Old Dominion Invitational, Black Knights team of sophomore Eva Sung and freshman Taler Brazell found success on the East side of the bracket Friday night. The duo came out on top in an 8-0 sweep in their first match versus Villanova’s Samantha Schafer and Anne Cognetti. The pair then continued their winning streak with an 8-0 sweep over Chowan’s Jessica DeBackre and Straffai Cleveland in the semifinal round followed by an 8-1 victory over Army teammates Haley O’Connor and Carly Riney. The tandem fell in the championship match to Old Dominion’s team of Melissa Esnal Olguin and Nika Khmolovska. Army’s Alyssa Hanson and Maya Parker were also victorious in two rounds with back-to-back 8-5 wins over two Villanova teams including duo Mikelle Macini and partner Allison Kuse, and Linley Busby and Connor Brewer.

The Black Knights will continue to play both singles and doubles at Lehigh on Saturday and Sunday while singles will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Hampton Roads/Old Dominion Invitational on Saturday. Recaps and results will be posted on goARMYsports as they become available.
