Army women's tennis will continue its fall tournament slate with a pair of events this weekend, as the Black Knights divvy up for the Billie Jean King Collegiate Invite at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., and the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invite in Newport News, Va. Matches in New York are scheduled from Saturday through Monday, while the Virginia tournament is set for Friday through Sunday.
Fourteen total players will take the court this weekend, as co-captains Erin Colton and Larraine Saavedra each headline a group at different events. Colton joins Jamila Paul, Carolyn Pitman, Gabriella Spindler, Eva Sung, Margaret Iliev, Haley O'Connor and Maya Parker at the U.S. Tennis Center. Holly Pappafotis, Kari Pope, Morgen Kiser, Alyssa Gleason and Kelly Daniel head to the Hampton Roads with Saavedra.
The USTA field features some of the top players from around the country, particularly those in the northeast region. Slated for the Hampton Roads tournament are players from Army, Christopher Newport, Chowan, Delaware, Drexel, George Mason, Hampden Sydney, Howard, Mary Washington, Shepherd, Villanova, Virginia State, and Virginia
The Black Knights most recently hosted the West Point Invitational where Pitman, a rookie out of West Chester, Ohio, won the third singles main draw. Pitman was one of a handful of rookies to enjoy a solid start to their collegiate career. Colton teamed with Sung, another member of the freshman class, to reach the quarterfinals of A Doubles, while Pappafotis and O'Connor advanced to the B Doubles quarterfinal round.
After the opening weekend of play, a trio of rookies - Pitman, Sung and Spindler -lead the team with four singles victories apiece. Iliev and Spindler, along with Colton and Sung, top the doubles pairs with three wins each.
