WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army women's tennis team will compete in two different tournaments to open its season since earning last year's ninth straight Patriot League Tournament title and sixth 20-win season. Half of the Black Knights will contend in the Stony Brook Classic as the other half will travel to the Quinnipiac Invitational. The weekend begins with opening rounds of both singles and doubles on Friday, Sept. 13, with final rounds of both on Sunday, Sept. 15.

After losing 2012-13 senior co-captains Erin Colton and Larraine Saavedra to graduation, the Black Knights have brought in six members of the Class of 2017 to add depth and personality onto the court as they fight for a 10th straight Patriot League title.

"These two tournaments are great starts to the season and it lets us see where we are," said head coach Paul Peck. "It's good for the freshman to get some competition. This will be their first college tennis experience and it will be good for them to get their nerves out of the way."

When taking a look at both tournaments this weekend, it is clear to see that Peck did not shy away from competition in the program's first tournament. The defending 2012-13 America East Champion Stony Brook will host eight teams at the outdoor University Courts including Long Island, Farleigh Dickinson, Rhode Island, ASA JC, Marist, Fordham and one half of Patriot League rivals, Navy.

Army will send four doubles teams in the mix of four flights to Stony Brook including senior co-captain Jamila Paul. The 2013 Scholar Athlete of the Year is a three-time All-Patriot League performer with 21 recorded singles wins and 22 doubles wins. Duos competing in four flights, Elle and Della Taylor (A), Gabriella Spindler and senior co-captain Jamila Paul (B), Caroline Lorenzini and Hayley O'Connor (C) and Nan Porter and Allyson Hayley (D). The Black Knights will send the same nine players to represent four singles flights including Paul, Spindler for A singles flight, both Taylors in B flight, O'Connor and Alyssa Gleason in C and  Porter, Hayley, Lorenzini in D.

The other half of the Black Knights will contend in the 17th annual Quinipiac Invitational. The three-day event will be held at Quinnipac's outdoor tennis courts and will host eight teams including Sacred Heart, UConn, Providence, Seton Hall, Niagara, Hartford and the other half of Navy.

The Black Knights will be sending four doubles teams in which the same eight players will represent four singles flights in the invitational. Doubles teams consist of senior co-captain Margaret Iliev and Carolyn Pitman (A), Eva Sung and Carly Riney (B), Alyssa Hanson and Maya Parker (C) and Taler Brazell and Kelly Daniel (D). Two players will also represent each of the four singles flights throughout the weekend.

"We have been working on a lot of different things but these tournaments allow for us to see what we need to work and focus on. This is the deepest team we've ever had so we're excited to see how it goes," said Peck.

Recaps from both the Stony Brook Classic and Quinnipiac Invitational will be posted on goARMYsports.com As results become available.
