LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Making its 13th NCAA Tournament appearance, the Army women's tennis team returns home with a 4-0 season-ending loss at seventh-seeded UCLA on Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Black Knights close out the year behind an impressive 22-7 mark, which included the program's unprecedented 14th Patriot League title.
Facing UCLA for the second time in the last four years, the result remained the same despite a valiant effort from the young Black Knights. Highlighting singles play, rookie Eva Sung pushed the Bruins' Pamela Montez to the brink over two sets. Sung, a first team All-Patriot League performer, held leads of 2-1 and 3-2 in the opening set before falling 6-4. Sung and Montez were tied 1-1 in the second set when the match was called.
UCLA controlled the remaining five flights, collecting the necessary three singles points in straight sets. Two of the three losses came to nationally ranked opponents, as freshman Gabriella Spindler fell to No. 93 Catherine Harrison and junior Jamila Paul suffered a loss to 20th-ranked Kyle McPhillips at Nos. 5 and 2, respectively. The Bruins' clinched the match after two hours of play as Courtney Dolehide topped Army junior Della Taylor in the sixth flight. Sung, senior co-captain Erin Colton, facing national No. 3 Robin Anderson, and freshman Carolyn Pitman all trailed when the match ended.
The Bruins quickly took a 1-0 lead with a pair of 8-0 wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively. The first Army tandem to suffer defeat, Colton and Paul, did so against the 38th-best doubles team in the country. Junior Margaret Ilievand Pitman proceeded to fall 8-0 in the third flight, which clinched the doubles point in favor of UCLA.
Host UCLA, an at-large tournament qualifier, will face the winner of Long Beach State and Oklahoma State in Sunday's second round match.
Reigning Patriot League Coach of the Year Paul Peck returns five singles starters and two doubles teams for the 2013-14 season. He guided the Black Knights to a ninth-straight Patriot League Tournament title and sixth-straight 20-win season in 2012-13. The Black Knights bid farewell to Colton and co-captain Larraine Saavedra, as the seniors will be commissioned during graduation exercises in two weeks.
