CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - A week after helping Army to a ninth-straight Patriot League title, junior Jamila Paul became the first Black Knight this season to earn Patriot League Women's Tennis Player of the Month honors on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulverde, Texas, native's only loss in singles or doubles for the entire month of April came at the hands of Navy's Erin Snook in the first regular-season meeting between Army and Navy April 7 at West Point. Snook got the better of the encounter with a 7-6, 6-3 victory, but since then Paul has won five straight singles contests.
After posting an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over Colgate's Alex Petrini at No. 2 singles in the Patriot League semifinals, Paul and Snook met again on championship Sunday. Snook took the first set 6-3, but Paul rallied for a 6-0 victory in set No. 2 and was leading 5-3 in the third when Army clinched the match and the title.
In doubles Paul played primarily at No. 2 with senior Erin Colton and went 6-0, including a pair of 8-1 victories in the Patriot League tournament. Paul played five of her eight singles bouts in April at the No. 2 position with the rest at the top flight.
A two-time All-Patriot League performer and 2013 team Most Valuable Player, Paul owns a 24-6 singles record this season and is 10-0 when playing in the top flight. She leads the team with a 28-7 doubles mark.
Army drew regional host No. 7 UCLA in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The match will be played on Saturday, March 11, at noon local time. Tickets for the NCAA Regionals can be purchased upon entrance to the Los Angeles Tennis Center (no advanced ticket sales). Prices are $7 for adults and $5 for youth/students.
