LEWISBURG, Pa. -
Two weeks away from hosting the 2013 Patriot League Tournament at West Point, the Army women's tennis team travels to Bucknell for its final regular-season test of league play on Saturday at noon. The Black Knights take a perfect 5-0 conference mark into the match and are looking to extend their win streak to 60 over Patriot League opponents during the regular season.
Army has swept four Patriot League opponents this year - Lehigh, Lafayette, Holy Cross and Colgate - and defeated rival Navy, 6-1, last weekend in the inaugural "star" match in the series.
Army is coming off a tough 5-2 non-conference loss to Fordham on Wednesday afternoon, shifting its record to 18-5 overall. Bucknell enters Saturday's showdown with a 6-10 overall mark and 1-1 showing in Patriot League play. The Bison defeated Colgate, 4-3, but lost to Navy, 7-0, earlier in the year.
The Black Knights have gotten rolling in a hurry as of late, sweeping the doubles point in each of the last five matches. Senior co-captain Erin Colton and reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Jamila Paul top the team with an 18-7 doubles record. Sisters Della and Elle Taylor have won four in a row and are 12-9 on the year. Also posting double-digit wins, freshman Carolyn Pitman and junior Margaret Iliev are 14-5.
In singles play, freshman Gabriella Spindler's 23-7 mark leads all players. Paul notched her 20th win of the season playing No. 1 against Fordham on Wednesday, while Pitman is an impressive 14-5 on the year. Pitman saw her eight-match win streak end against Fordham.
The Black Knights have blanked Bucknell in each of the last two seasons and hold a 29-4 lead in the all-time series. In one of the most memorable meetings of the series, Army outlasted Bucknell, 4-3, to win the 2010 Patriot League Championship.
