WEST POINT, N.Y. -
The Army women's tennis team is in action twice this weekend with a pair of road matches, including its annual "Star" Match against Navy. The Black Knights and the Midshipmen will meet at 10 a.m. in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday before Army heads to Baltimore, Md., for an 11 a.m. match against Loyola on Sunday.
Army (18-2, 4-0 Patriot League) collected a pair of victories on March 28, topping nonconference opponent Manhattan, 6-1, at home and besting Patriot League foe Lehigh, 5-2, on the road.
Against Manhattan, senior Carly Riney, sophomore Haley O'Connor and freshmen Taler Brazell, Caroline Lorenzini and Nancy Porter all earned singles wins for the Black Knights, while the pairings of Brazell and O'Connor and Porter and junior Maya Parker each posted doubles victories.
In the Lehigh match, Army collected wins in four of the six singles matches, with seniors Jamila Paul and Della Taylor, sophomore Carolyn Pitman and freshman Allyson Hayley all coming out on top. All three Black Knight doubles tandems notched victories, with Della Taylor and junior Elle Taylor, Paul and Pitman, and Hayley and sophomore Gabriella Spindler winning at the first, second and third positions, respectively.
Four Black Knights have achieved double-digit dual-match wins on the season, including Pitman (12-2), Paul (11-3), Hayley (10-4) and Porter (10-4). In doubles action, Paul and Pitman have combined for a perfect 16-0 mark in dual matches, while Della and Elle Taylor have gone 10-6.
Navy (17-6, 2-0) was last on the court on March 30, when it recorded a 4-3 victory at Bucknell. The Midshipmen received doubles wins from junior Noelle Kaufmann and sophomore Mikaela Carlson, and senior Darien Sears and sophomore Sam Droop in what would prove to be the deciding doubles point. Navy went on to split its six singles matches with Bucknell, as Droop, senior Erin Snook and junior Gabby Winter each won.
Loyola (5-2, 1-0) heads into a busy weekend that features three matches in three days. The Greyhounds host Delaware State on Friday and Coppin State on Saturday before welcoming Army on Sunday. Loyola is coming off a 7-0 win over Lafayette on March 29. The Greyhounds won all nine matches, including singles and doubles victories from junior Olivia Ott, sophomores Megan Hahn, Emily Hughes and Haleigh Morgus and freshmen Katelyn Hissong and Ania Krawiec.
Army is 4-0 all-time versus Navy and will face Loyola for the first time on Sunday.
Following the weekend, the Black Knights will return home for a match against Bucknell on Saturday, April 12. The Senior Day match is slated for 11 a.m.
