Coach Peck Reaction To ITA Weekend
USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Central
WEST POINT, N.Y. - After falling out of contention in the doubles draw on Friday, junior Jamila Paul and senior co-captain Erin Colton saw their singles bids come to an end late Saturday night in the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Tournament. The five-day event began on Thursday morning and concludes with Tuesday's finals at Army's state-of-the-art Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
After recording a pair of doubles wins on the opening day, 16th-seeded Paul and Colton dropped an 8-3 decision to Elizabeth Epstein and Hanna Yu of Yale. The eighth-seeded Epstein and Yu's victory eliminated Paul and Colton from the doubles portion of the tournament.
Paul won her way into the main singles bracket with two wins in the qualifying round on Friday. She was one of eight players to play their way into the main draw. Paul, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Year, defeated Delaware's Deana Jonjic in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) to reach the round of 64 players. Paul drew ninth-seeded Nini Lagvilava of Stony Brook in the second round and fell short in a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6 (4) second-round match.
Colton received a first-round bye into the round of 64 and dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to 32nd-seeded Nevena Selakovic of St. John's in her first singles match of the tournament late Saturday night.
Tournament play continues all day Sunday at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center. Finals will be played on Tuesday at the same venue. The singles and doubles winners of the five-day tournament earn a spot in the national indoor championships at Flushing Meadows, N.Y., in November.
