WEST POINT, N.Y. - Playing with a distinct home court advantage, junior Jamila Paul played her way into the singles main draw with a pair of wins in the qualifying round and will join senior Erin Colton in the main singles draw at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships at West Point's Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
The pair also teamed up to reach the round of 16 of the doubles draw.
Seeded fifth in the singles qualifying round, Paul dispatched players from Quinnipiac and Fairleigh Dickinson to become one of eight players to advance to the main draw out of the qualifying round. Paul is set to play Deana Jonjic of Delaware in the round of 128 in singles. Colton earned a first-round bye in the same bracket.
In doubles action, Paul and Colton dispatched pairs from rival Marist and Boston University by scores of 8-4 and 8-6, respectively. The pair, seeded 16th in the draw, will face eighth-seeded Elizabeth Epstein and Hanna Yu of Yale looking to advance to the quarterfinals.
Play resumes all day tomorrow at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The singles and doubles winners of the five-day tournament earn a spot in the national indoor championships at Flushing Meadows, N.Y., in November. For daily updates and a complete schedule, click here for ITA Regional Central.
