WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army women's tennis team closed out a busy weekend during which players competed in the annual Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Invitational in Flushing, N.Y., and the Hampton Roads Invitational in Newport News, Va. Several players enjoyed success in both events, as the team split to partake in both tournaments.

Competing against some of the toughest players on the east coast, Army produced nine singles wins and a saw all three of its doubles teams advance to the round of 16.

Playing the highest of any Black Knight, reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Jamila Paul registered straight-set wins over Lindsay Balsamo of Rutgers and Nikita Uberoi of Brown during the qualifying rounds. Paul's run ended in the round of 16 following a 6-3, 6-1 setback against N.C. State's Elisha Hande.

A bevy of rookies took the stage at the prestigious National Tennis Center with several enjoying success. Advancing the furthest of any Army player at the event, freshman Haley O'Connor advanced to the Flight I singles quarterfinals before suffering a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Maria Rodriguez from Seton Hall. In the previous matches, O'Connor dispatched players from Fairfield and St. Francis (Pa.) in the qualifying and round of 16, respectively.

Playing out of the G singles bracket, Gabriella Spindler collected a pair of wins during the qualifying rounds, defeating both N.C. State's Taylor Zayton and Charleston Southern's Chanel Bell in straight sets. Spindler went on to fall to Amber Washington of St. John's in the round of 16.

Rounding out Army's singles victories at the event was freshman Carolyn Pitman's straight-set win over Lucy Jasso in the Flight E qualifying round - her first match of the weekend.

Three Army tandems advanced to the round of 16 of three different doubles draws, but all three were sent home in that round.

A couple states away, the rest of the Black Knights joined players from 12 other schools in the Hampton Roads Invitational. The event began outdoors at Huntington Park, but moved indoors as the weekend weather progressed.

Army totaled eight singles wins and recorded three doubles victories. Four different Army players competed out of the Flight B singles bracket with both sophomore Alyssa Gleason and rookie Kelly Daniel registering opening-round wins. Both fell in straight sets in the quarterfinals.

Moving down to the Flight C singles bracket, it was a pair of Army seniors shining throughout the weekend. Kari Pope and co-captain Larraine Saavedra blew through the first two rounds, setting up a meeting with one another in the final. The pair opted not to play the championship match. Both Pope and Saavedra went through players from Villanova and Drexel to reach the finals.

In doubles action, Daniel paired with senior Holly Pappafotis to reach the Flight B quarterfinals, the furthest of any Army team, and went on to take third place.

The Black Knights will take the upcoming weekend off from competition. Those qualifying for the ITA Regionals will compete Oct. 19-22 as Army hosts the regional event at West Point, N.Y.
