Army Closes Out Day One Of West Point Invite

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Three rounds of doubles play and a round of singles action are in the books as the Army women's tennis team hosted players from seven other clubs in the opening day of the West Point Invitational.

Senior Erin Colton teamed with rookie Eva Sung in the top doubles flight. The pair advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw, dominating Lehigh's Ali Kaminetsky and Jillian Sloan in an 8-1 win before falling to Rachel Cantor and Sarah Viebrok in the quarters. Sophomores Maya Parker and Alyssa Gleason also teamed up in the top flight and went 1-1 on the afternoon. Parker and Gleason remain alive in the top flight consolation bracket to be played out on Saturday.

Veterans Morgen Kiser and Kari Pope opened the day with a n 8-3 win over Lehigh's Molly Brooks and Emily Bruch in Flight B doubles. Also collecting a victory in the main draw was Holly Pappafotis and Haley O'Connor. Ousted in the opening round, third-seeded Margaret Iliev and Gabriella Spindler will play out of the consolation bracket.

With two rounds of doubles completed at Army's outdoor Malek Courts, the tournament squeezed in a full round of singles before nightfall. Some brackets played through two rounds where time and light allowed.

In the second singles bracket, Sung met Kaminetsky once again and came away with a straight-set (6-1, 6-3) victory. Tabbed the No. 4 seed in the third singles bracket, Iliev advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Fordham's Hanna Fritzinger. Iliev meets Jocelyn Providence of Massachusetts in Saturday's quarters. Also advancing through the first round of Flight C, Spindler downed Natalie Robson of Connecticut, 6-4, 7-5. She will face third-seeded Arielle Griffin of UMass on Saturday morning.

Pappafotis is the only other Black Knight still alive in the singles main draws. The junior senior recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win over Quinnipiac's Nicole Keklik in the opening round of fourth singles and will face second-seeded Chanel Glasper of UMass on Saturday morning.
