WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army women’s tennis team posted its fourth win of the season on Friday night, with a 4-3 decision over Stony brook at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Black Knights will continue to play throughout the weekend as they will face Connecticut and Fordham this Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Army opened the day with a set of doubles wins from duo senior co-captain Jamila Paul and sophomore Carolyn Pitman and team of senior co-captain Margaret Iliev and senior Carly Riney, to claim the first match point, heading into singles play.
Playing at first singles, Paul outlasted junior Polina Movchan in three sets to tie Stony Brook, 3-3. Paul fell to Movhcan, 6-3 in the first set but was able to bounce back to claim the second set, 6-2. The senior then registered a third-set 10-8 victory to make it a final singles match decision.
After helping the Black Knights earn points in doubles, Pitman looked to finish out the match with an Army win in second singles versus Nadia Smergut. Pitman claimed a first set victory, 6-4, and then moved on to win the match with an ace for a 7-5 decision.
The Black Knights will once again return to Lichtenberg Tennis Center for two days of matches starting with the Huskies at 1 p.m. on Saturday and finishing out the weekend with the Rams on Sunday at 1 p.m.
