ITHACA, N.Y. - Seeing its first action in nearly three months, the Army women's tennis team faired well in the opening day of the Cornell Winter Invitational at Reis Tennis Center. The Black Knights collected first singles wins and a doubles victories on Friday.
Due to a combination of weather conditions and illness, Army, Seton Hall and Cornell are the only teams making up this year's field. The tournament typically features players from all over the Northeast region.
In singles action, reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Jamila Paul made quick work of Seton Hall's Julia Keenan by a 6-4, 6-1 score. Meanwhile, rookie Eva Sung collected a straight-set (6-2, 6-3) win over the Pirates' Alexandra Lambert. Paul and Sung are scheduled to play one another on Saturday. Both wins came in the A singles flight, in which senior Erin Colton is seeded third and received a first-round bye.
Senior Larraine Saavedra also took a bye in the B singles bracket, while Haley O'Connor, Morgen Kiser and Elle Taylor each recorded first-round victories.
The Black Knights' lone doubles win of the day came thanks to Sung and O'Connor in the B doubles bracket. Saavedra and freshman Gabriella Spindler, along with Kiser and Parker, earned a first-round bye in the B doubles flight.
