The Army softball team kicked off its season Feb. 27 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. Senior team captain Ashlie Christian will be keeping a running diary throughout the season, so check back frequently to get the inside scoop on the Army softball team!

April 6

On the 24th we played Yale. Coach kept emphasizing how we had not won a game against Yale since 1980, so we were all pretty tired of hearing it and just wanted to beat them. We had a solid win in the first game beating them 5-3, but weren't able to score in the second losing a close 1-0 game.

The following weekend we opened Patriot League play with rival Lehigh. For as long as I have been here, Lehigh has been our biggest rival in the Patriot League. Unlike most other sports, Navy does not have a softball team, so we do not have the Army-Navy rivalry that every other team does. Lehigh has been the equivalent of our Navy. The first day of the weekend series we played so well. We came from behind in both games to get the sweep on the day. On the second day of the series, we again rallied in the bottom of the 7th, but were unable to pull off the wins. We ended up splitting the series 2-2, all games were one-run ballgames. It was the first time in my four years here that we've won two games against Lehigh in a weekend series, and the first time that all four games had been one-run ball games. Our defense was exceptional throughout the entire weekend, and we played hard to the end scoring most of our runs in the bottom of the 7th. Lauren (Gobar) hit a home run for us in the first game, and Abbie (Gottschall) and Lindsey (Romack) scored the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the 7th. Darcy (Wilson) came through when we needed it with a clutch home run in the bottom of the 7th of the second game of the day to give us the 1-0 win. On Sunday we again rallied in the bottom of the 7th, but were unable to get the wins. Everyone on the team was happy with the way we fought and came back to make them close games. In the past, our team was not good at coming from behind and would not have been able to keep fighting to the end. Now we just need to work on getting the runners in when it counts.

This weekend we hosted Holy Cross. We split on Saturday, losing the first game 4-3 and winning the second 7-2. Lauren (Gobar) did a great job running the bases, taking advantage of Holy Cross mental errors and stealing home to get us a key run. Also Abbie (Gottschall) hit her first home run of the year bringing us to within one in the first game. In the second game we finally put things together offensively, bringing in the runs when we needed them. We collected 10 hits in each game, but the second game we were able to put them together to get the runs we needed to win.

We've had our ups and downs so far this season. We haven't played as well as we could and lost to teams that we shouldn't have lost to. Our defense has improved and offensively we are starting to get more hits, but we still struggle with putting runs on the board. This upcoming week is a busy one, so hopefully the weather will hold out and we can get some wins.

Very Respectfully,
