2004 NFCA Leadoff Classic Diary
After classes all morning on Thursday and a long evening of traveling, we arrived in Columbus, Ga.
This morning we headed to St. Elmo's Elementary School to meet the fourth and fifth graders that had been writing to us. The children were so excited to see us, but were disappointed because they were not going to be able to come to our game because it was too cold (in the 30's) for them.
We talked to all the kids and took pictures with them. They are all such smart little kids. One boy had on a sweatshirt that said, "HOOAH it's an Army thing!" and BDU pants. The teachers told us that he had bought it just to wear when he met us.
It was great to spend time with the little kids. They were all so respectful and eager to meet us. It was a great experience for us as well. I want to say "thank you" to all those at St. Elmo's for their support.
We started off the NFCA Classic by playing Washington. They were ranked #4 in the nation going into the weekend, but we were excited about playing. We were the visitors so got to bat first. We loaded the bases, but couldn't push any runs across. The game was a lot close than the score showed, and we had a few miscues. After the game was over, we realized that we had a shot.
In the Florida State game, we had some positive things, but we couldn't get anything going and got into a hole and didn't recover. It was a cold day and we are ready to put it behind us and move on to Saturday.
