WEST POINT, N.Y. - Coming off a spring campaign that concluded with a Patriot League championship and an NCAA Regional bid, the Army softball team turns its attention to its non-traditional fall season and a competitive eight-game home schedule at the Softball Complex.
The fall allows head coach Michelle DePolo, who reached the 100-win plateau in the spring, and her staff an opportunity to evaluate the talents of her returning veterans along with the newcomers as she looks to duplicate or equal the success the team enjoyed in 2013. Army posted its second highest win total (35) in school history en route to earning its third bid to the NCAA Regional after capturing its first Patriot League Tournament title since 2002 and fifth overall.
Among the returnees are six upperclassmen in rising seniors Amanda Nguyen, April Ortenzo, and Marina Northup, along with rising juniors Alex Gaff, Ali Cleinmark and Jewels Steurer. Nguyen, one of three returning Patriot League all-stars, is a three-time first-team selection as an outfielder. Joining her are rising sophomores Kasey McCravey and Christian McKone, who earned first-team and second-team league honors at third base and outfield, respectively.
Army opens its fall schedule on Sunday, Sept. 15, hosting Marist and St. Peter's, followed by doubleheaders against NYIT and Caldwell on Sunday, Sept. 22, and Friday, Sept. 27, respectively. The Black Knights close out the fall slate taking on FDU and Monmouth on Saturday, Oct. 5.
