West Point, N.Y. -
Senior Alex Reynolds and sophomore Morgan Lashley were among an elite group of student athletes from around the country honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association with their selection to the All-Northeast Team.
It is the first time that Reynolds, named to the first unit at second base, was honored, and is the second straight year that Lashley was tabbed for second-team honors as a pitcher.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2013 NFCA Division I All-American teams.
Army (35-24) received the news in Texas where the Black Knights are preparing for the NCAA Austin Regional after capturing the Patriot League title and automatic bid last weekend.
It is the third and second time, respectively, that Lashley and Reynolds received postseason honors. Lashley was named the MVP of Patriot League Tournament after hurling Army to a pair of shutout decisions over perennial power Leigh in the championship series.
Prior to the conference tournament, Reynolds was named an All-Patriot League selection at second base for the third straight year, while Lashley picked up her second as a pitcher. She was a second-team pick after earning first-team honors as Pitcher and Rookie of the Year in 2012.
Reynolds, the lone senior on Army's team, has had a prolific season. She shattered the school all-time mark for runs batted in (135) and is just two shy of tying her own school single-season standard of 45.
One of four players on the team from the state of Texas, Reynolds (from Katy) also holds the school mark for games played (219) and at bats (706). She is tied for second in walks (63), is third in total bases (207) and lists fourth in runs scored (112), doubles (41) and hits (217). Reynolds heads into the NCAA Tournament batting .362 with a team-high 15 doubles and 98 total bases.
Though only a sophomore, Lashley broke Army's all-time mark for wins with 62 after picking up four at the Patriot League Tournament. She ranks second in strikeouts (429), innings pitched (608.1) and winning percentage (.689).
Lashley, currently ranked No. 6 nationally in wins with 29, has pitched 281.2 innings in the circle with 43 appearances, 40 starts and 27 completions along with six shutouts. She shows a 2.21 ERA and .211 opposition batting average. The right-hander pitcher has not allowed a run in the last 18 innings.
It is the second straight year and fifth time that Army has had two players earn All-Region honors. Lashley is the third Black Knight to repeat, joining Army Hall of Famer Nicki Robbins, who earned first-team honors all four years (1999-2002, and Lindsey Gerheim (2004-05). Robbins was on the first two Army teams that competed at the NCAA Regionals - 2000 and 2002.
Army faces a stern test Friday at the NCAA Austin, Texas Regional when it takes on No. 4 national seed Texas (40-18) at the Red & Charline McCombs Field. Houston and South Carolina round out the rest of the four-team field.
The Black Knights are making their third trip to the NCAA Regionals and first since 2002.
