Army (35-24) earned its third trip to the NCAA Regionals and first since 2002 after rallying to win the Patriot League's Tournament and automatic bid last weekend.
The Black Knights are 1-4 in the NCAA Tournament in their two previous trips that took them in 2000 to the state of Washington and two years later (2002) to Oklahoma. Army picked up its first win in 2002 against Utah, 2-0, in the Region 5 Tournament, then threw a scare at Arkansas before being eliminated.
This is the second time that Army takes on Texas (Big 12) in its NCAA opener. The Black Knights and Longhorns met in 2002 with Army falling to top-seeded Texas. Though bowing 4-0, Army kept the Longhorns off the scoreboard for three innings before errors proved their undoing. Hurling five innings to record the win was Cat Osterman, who two years later pitched the USA Women's Softball Team to an Olympic gold medal.
Army rebounded behind Shauna Evans' three-hit shutout along with timely late-inning hits that produced a pair of runs and the first win in school history against an NCAA Tournament team. The Black Knights then fell to Arkansas, 2-0, in the elimination game.
The Black Knights earned their first postseason trip in 2002 and headed to the state of Washington where they drew the top-ranked team in the nation in the host Huskies. Though bowing 5-0, Army threatened in the top of the fifth inning, but its rally was nipped. The Black Knights took Tennessee-Chattanooga to nine innings before going down to a 6-4 defeat.
Army will be meeting Texas (44-8) for the third time in the series with the Longhorns taking the second game in a come-from-behind 6-3 win at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in 2004. The Black Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in that game, but Texas rallied with four unearned runs in the home half of the third.
The Black Knights will face either Houston (40-18) or South Carolina (32-23) on Saturday. It will be Army's third meeting against the Cougars (Conference USA), who they fell to at the Crown Plaza Classic, 9-10 and 10-1, in 2008 when head coach Michelle DePolo was a Black Knight assistant. If Army and the Gamecocks of South Carolina (SEC) meet on Saturday, it will be the first-ever between the teams.
