WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Sophomore Kasey McCravey and freshman Caroline Smith were among eleven players named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the 2014 Softball Championships.
Smith hurled fourth-seeded Army to a 5-1 (9) victory over top-seeded Lehigh in the opening round of the tournament as the Black Knights snapped a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth inning.
McCravey, 2-for-4 with two runs scored, led off the tie-breaking ninth with an infield hit and scored on freshman Marah House's two-run double as the Black Knights exploded for four runs.
Smith, who helped her own cause driving in the first run of the game with an RBI groundout, retired Lehigh in the bottom of the ninth in going the distance on a six-hitter. She walked three and struck out four as Army recorded its second opening-round win over Lehigh in six tries and first since 2001.
The Black Knights also notched their third straight opening-round victory at the tournament following decisions over Bucknell in 2013 and Colgate in 2012.
Army fell 8-0 (6) to second-seeded Boston University in a winners' bracket game followed by a 3-2 loss to No. 3 Bucknell in an elimination game that ended the season for the Black Knights (23-28).
McCravey batted .333 in the tournament and Smith hit .286 along with compiling a 3.44 ERA as the starting pitcher in all three games. McCravey has been dominant at the plate and in the field throughout the season and led the team in batting (.388), doubles (10), home runs (seven), RBI (44), total bases (.605), while listing second in hits (59) and third in stolen bases (19).
Smith closed out her first season with a 13-13 mark drawing duty in 150.1 innings compiling a 3.03 ERA along with having a hand in five shutouts, to include four solo efforts. She appeared in 28 games with 25 starts and went the distance 15 times.
