WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Five members of the Army softball team were named to the All-Patriot League Team following a vote of the conference's head coaches. Senior Alex Reynolds, junior Amanda Nguyen and freshman Kasey McCravey earned first-team accolades with two other standouts, sophomore Morgan Lashley and freshman Christian McKone, named to the second unit.
It is the third straight year that Reynolds (second base) and Nguyen (outfielder) earned first-team certificates at their positions, while it is the second time that Lashley has been recognized in the league as a pitcher with her selection to the second unit after placing first last year. It is the first time since 2011 that Army has had two freshmen selected for all-star honors with McCravey's selection to the first unit at third base and McKone to the second team as an outfielder.
Army (31-23, 12-8 PL), seeded second for the tournament, trailed regular-season champion and tournament host Lehigh (35-14-1, 17-3 PL) in number of certificates as the Mountain Hawks claimed seven with six first team and one second, along with sweeping all four major awards. Morgan Decker was named the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, Rebecca Bliss earned Pitcher of the Year honors and Fran Troyan was voted Coach of the Year.
Third-seeded Bucknell (20-28, 11-9 PL) had four selections (one first team and three on the second) followed by Holy Cross (13-31, 7-13 PL) with three, Colgate (16-30, 9-11) with two and Lafayette (11-43, 4-16 PL) had one.
Reynolds and Nguyen have helped rewrite Army's offensive records this season. Reynolds is the Black Knights' all-time leader in runs batted in (133) and at bats (689) with Nguyen shattering the mark for stolen bases (82). Reynolds also lists second in walks (63), third in total bases (301) and games played (214), and is fourth in doubles (41), runs scored (111), hits (211) and home runs (15).
Nguyen is second on Army's all-time chart for runs scored (120), which is four shy of the record, and batting average (.375). She ranks third in hits (216), four away from second place, and is fourth in at bats (576). Nguyen broke her school single-season mark for hits (76), which is two shy of the league's record, and runs scored (43) this spring.
Nguyen, Reynolds, McCravey and McKone have all batted over .300 this season and combined for 252 of Army's 442 hits, 145 of 222 runs scored and 89 of 185 RBI. Nguyen, the Patriot League's Player of the Week following her performance last week, heads to the tournament with a team-best .378 batting average, along with 76 hits, 43 runs and 36 stolen bases. She is currently ranked 16th nationally in stolen bases.
Reynolds is second on the team batting .363 and paces the Black Knights in total bases (92), doubles (15), slugging percentage (.514) and RBI (41), and is second in hits (65) and walks (15). She is 69th nationally in doubles and is part of Army's double-play tandem that is ranked 19th nationally.
McCravey and McKone are tied for third with .321 batting averages. McCravey is second on the team in runs scored (41), RBI (33), doubles (11), total bases (82), slugging percentage (.446), at bats (184) and walks (17), and lists third in hits (59). She is the seventh Army player selected for all-league honors at third base and just the third freshman, joining Sheri Schweiker (1991) and Erin McClain (2007).
McKone, the league's reigning Rookie of the Week, leads the team in walks (20) and triples (two), is second in stolen bases (12), third in runs scored (33) and on-base percentage (.396), fourth in hits (52) and fifth in total bases (57).
Lashley, the Patriot League's Pitcher and Rookie of the Year in 2012, has led Army's pitching staff for the second straight year and leads the league in wins (25), strikeouts (177), innings pitched (250.0), appearances (38) and games started (35). She is ranked 15th nationally in victories and 68th in strikeouts.
The right-hander is second in the league in shutouts (four), opponent batting average (.216) and games completed, and is third in ERA (2.30). She currently lists second on Army's all-time chart in wins (58- two shy of the leader), winning percentage (.682) and strikeouts (414). She lists fourth in innings pitched (577.0), fifth in ERA (2.27) and sixth in appearances (94).
This group played an instrumental role in Army posting its second straight 30-win season and third in the last four years. The Black Knights have reached the 30-win season four times, and its 31 wins this season lists tied for third highest. Army has been first in the league in fielding percentage all season long and its mark of .972 ranks 21st nationally, while listing 19th in double players per game and 57th in stolen bases per game (1.33)
Army heads to the Patriot League Tournament after cinching its fourth straight berth and 20th overall. The No. 2 Black Knights, seeded second for the second straight year, take on No. 3 Bucknell on Thursday (May 9) at 2:30 p.m. following the opening game between No. 1 Lehigh and No. 4 Colgate at noon.
Competition continues Friday with the winners' bracket at 11 a.m. followed by an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. between the losers of the first day. The winner of the second game on Friday takes on the loser of the first game in the second elimination game at 4 p.m. The winner heads to the championship game Saturday morning at 12 p.m. with a second game scheduled for 2 p.m. if necessary.
Last year Army reached the championship finals for the first time since 2006, and the Black Knights goal is to be there once again as they look to earn their first tournament title since 2002 and sixth overall.
Army is 6-6 against the field, taking three of the four-game series from Bucknell, splitting its series with Colgate while taking one from Lehigh.
