WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Army's softball game with Iona, scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, has been changed from a doubleheader to a single game beginning at 4 p.m.
Live stats will be available via GameTracker by logging onto Army's official athletics website (www.goARMYsports.com). In-game Twitter updates will also be offered through the official handle of Army_WSoftball. A live video streamed broadcast of the game will be available through Knight Vision, the Black Knights' subscription-based multimedia platform.
Army (20-19, 5-7 PL) is coming off a 5-4 defeat of host Lehigh to earn a split of Sunday's Patriot League doubleheader in Bethlehem, Pa. Junior Marina Northup keyed Army's three-run rallying seventh driving in the tying and go-ahead runs with a single as Army overcame a 4-1 deficit against the defending conference champions.
Though the preseason favorite Mountain Hawks took three of four games from Army over the weekend, two of those losses were by a single run (6-5 and 3-2) with the other by two runs (2-0). The Black Knights slipped to 5-7 in the league standings to trail Bucknell (6-6) for fourth place.
Army will host Bucknell this weekend in a critical four-game series, and needs to take at least three games from the Bison in order to move ahead of them in the Patriot League standings. The Black Knights close out their final weekend of league play (April 27-28) against a Lafayette (2-10 PL) team that competes at Colgate (7-5 PL) this weekend.
Junior Amanda Nguyen continues to set the offensive pace for the Black Knights. She leads the team with 54 hits and a .372 batting average along with 22 steals. She ranks second in runs scored (32), trailing freshman Kasey McCravey's 33. McCravey is batting .328 with 44 hits and leads Army with four home runs. Senior co-captain Alex Reynolds is second in hits (46), runs batted in (24) and batting average (.362). Junior April Ortenzo, who shares the captaincy with Reynolds, is the leader in RBI (25) and is second in home runs (three).
Sophomore Morgan Lashley, who earned the win in relief against Lehigh, shows a 2.74 ERA along with 16 wins and 123 strikeouts to lead the league in the last two categories.
Iona (8-28, 4-4 MAAC) is coming off a 10-5 eight-inning nightcap win over Rider Sunday in splitting a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader. Army is the second Patriot League opponent Iona is facing this year as the Gaels met Lehigh in early March at the Towson Tournament with the Mountain Hawks winning the first game 8-5, but falling 6-2 the next day.
The Army-Iona series, which began in 1980 is deadlocked at 14-14 following Army's 5-0 home win last year that snapped a three-game losing streak to the Gaels, who swept a twinbill in 2010 and edged the Black Knights 2-1 in 2011.
Army closes out an eight-game home slate this weekend hosting Bucknell in a four-game Patriot League series. Sunday is "Senior Day" and Army will be hosting a softball clinic for youngsters K through eighth grade following the doubleheader.
