Watch Rowley Interview
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior Alexis AuBuchon and junior Chris Rowley were named co-recipients of the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week Award on Monday following standout performances on the diamond. It is the first AAA citation for AuBuchon this season and second for Rowley.
AuBuchon had a monster of a week at the plate leading the softball team to a 6-0 showing capped by a four-game series sweep of Holy Cross in Army's Patriot League debut over the weekend. The first baseman batted .684 for the week (13-for-19) with 10 runs scored and 12 runs batted in for a 1.263 slugging percentage and .684 on-base percentage.
In league action over the weekend, the native of Trinity, Fla., batted .667 (8-for-12) with six runs scored and eight RBI as she smacked a pair of doubles and two home runs for a 1.417 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage.
In the series opener on Saturday, AuBuchon drove in four runs with a pair of doubles in an 8-0 five-inning decision, and scored the winning run in a 1-0 nightcap edging. In the second day doubleheader sweep, the four-year starter blasted a pair of homers driving in three runs and scored three times in a 10-4 decision. She closed out the busy week knocking in a run and scoring a run in a 5-3 nightcap decision as Army completed the weekend sweep.
AuBuchon batted safely in all six games that began with a sweep of St. Peter's in stretching her hitting streak to 10 straight as she leads the team with a .411 batting and 51 total bases. She is tied for the team lead in hits (39) and is second in RBI (19). AuBuchon, who sports a .537 slugging percentage and .446 on-base percentage, ranks third on Army's career list for hits (194), lists third in doubles (44) and fourth in RBI (92).
In baseball action over the weekend in Annapolis, Md., Rowley's complete-game one-hit shutout in Army's 2-0 opening win over Navy series set the tone for Army's four-game sweep of the Midshipmen. The Black Knights, who have won nine straight series stars, are 31-9 versus Navy over the last nine seasons.
The junior righty (6-0) faced just two over the minimum en route to his sixth straight win. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, struck out five batters and did not allow a walk. Rowley retired 15 straight batters at one point and did not yield a hit until there were two outs the sixth. He outdueled Navy ace Ben Nelson (1-2), who permitted two runs on six hits over seven frames.
It marked the second complete-game shutout of the season for Rowley, who lowered his earned run average to a miniscule 1.38 following Saturday's effort. He continues to lead the team with 35 strikeouts and 45.2 innings pitched. Army (19-7, 4-0 PL) has won 14 of its last 17 games.
Both diamond teams have non-league games this week before returning to conference action Easter weekend. Softball hosts Temple in a non-league twinbill Tuesday, April 3, 3:30 p.m. at the Softball Complex, while baseball is home to Manhattan on Wednesday, April 4, 3 p.m. at Doubleday Field.
