BETHLEHEM, Pa. - -
Emily Bausher pitched a three-hit shutout and Morgan Decker, the Patriot League's Player and Rookie of the Year, went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored as host and defending champion Lehigh defeated second-seeded Army, 8-0 (6), in a winners' bracket game at the PL Tournament Friday morning at Kaufman Field.
The Black Knights (32-24) drop into the losers' bracket and will play the final game of the day at 3:30 p.m. when they take on the winner of the elimination game between No. 3 Bucknell and No. 4 Colgate in the double-elimination tournament. The winner of the 3:30 game advances to Saturday's championship round against No. 1 Lehigh.
Lehigh (37-14-1) jumped on Army starter Morgan Lashley (26-12) for a 2-0 lead on Decker's home run in the bottom of the first inning.
After failing to score in the second inning, the Mountain Hawks scored runs in each of the next four innings. Liz Lucas' two-out RBI double off Army reliever Jewels Steurer in the bottom of the sixth drove in Decker to force the game to be called on the eight-run mercy rule.
Army snapped Bausher's perfect game in the top of the third with a pair of back-to-back singles by Bernadette Cardon and Ali Cleinmark with one out. With runners at second and third and Lehigh holding a slim 2-0 led, Bausher retired the side on an infield grounder and flyout to left field.
The Black Knights reached scoring position for the last time in the top of the fifth. Marina Northup drew the lone walk off Bausher to start off the frame and moved to second base with one out when Cleinmark was hit by a pitch, but a strikeout and grounder back to the circle ended that threat.
