WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Army closed out its regular-season schedule Saturday afternoon at the Army Softball Complex by splitting a non-league doubleheader with Fairleigh Dickinson. Kasey McCravey drove in four runs in an 8-1 win in the opener, and Lauren Stavrou won a pitcher's duel in FDU's 1-0 10th-inning victory in the nightcap.
The split left Army with a 31-23 record and its 31 wins are tied for the third highest mark in school history. The Knights closed out their season 23-21.
The Black Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opening game on an RBI double by McKravey (2-for-2) that drove in Christian McKone, who reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and stole second base.
The Knights tied up the game 1-1 in the top of the second on Angelique Nieves' leadoff home run. Army hurler Morgan Lashley (25-11), who went the distance on a three hitter along with seven strikeouts, got into a jam after loading the bases with three walks sandwiched around a pair of outs in that frame before closing the door on a groundout.
Army snapped the tie in the bottom of the third inning on McCravey's sacrifice fly to left field scoring Amanda Nguyen (2-for-4 with two runs scored), who led off with a bunt and moved around on back-to-back stolen bases, to pull ahead 2-1.
The Black Knights, scoring in each of the final four frames, plated a single run in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away 4-1 on Rae Anne Payleitner's run-scoring single to right field and McCravey's RBI double up the middle, respectively. Army broke open the game with four runs in the sixth collecting three of its four hits along with a pair of walks off reliever Maire Saughnessy.
Amanda Nguyen's infield hit scored Alyssa Strobehn, who pinch ran for Bernadette Cardon after she drew a walk. Following an out, Srobehn moved around on a walk to Ali Cleinmark and a wild pitch in accounting for the first run. Cleinmark motored around on a wild pitch and infield single and crossed on McCravey's sacrifice fly to right field in accounting for the second run in that frame.
Nguyen, who beat out an infield hit stole and stole second and was sacrificed to third, scored on a passed ball, and Alex Reynolds (2-for-3) closed out the scoring with an RBI double, her 15th of the season, to score McKone for the final run and 8-1 lead.
Lashley did not allow FDU in scoring scoring position scattering one hit (a bunt) over the final five innings in padding her career wins to 58, two shy of the school mark.
In the nightcap, FDU reached Braetana Roy (4-10) for two hits and an unearned run in the top of the 10th inning on Mikayla Fernandez (2-for-5) RBI single. She drove in Maddy Wilen, who reached on a fielder's choice following an error, stole second and moved to third on Julia Northcutt's single to right field, in snapping a scoreless tie.
Stavrou, who scattered six hits, fanned three and walk one, retired the Black Knights in order in the bottom half of the 10th to preserve the win.
Army runners reached scoring position in the first, fourth, sixth and seventh innings, but Stavrou got out safely each time stranding five runners in those frames.
Roy, who was touched for the hard luck loss, stranded 10 FDU runners. Three times she got out of jams with runners in scoring position, leaving two runners on in the fourth, one in the sixth at third base and two in the seventh.
The Black Knights collected 16 hits in the twinbill with Reynolds smacking multiple hits in both games going 4-for-7.
