HOUSTON, Texas - Stephen F. Austin rallied from a 7-5 deficit with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, and reliever Brittany Lewis held Army to one hit and a run (unearned) over the final 3.2 innings in a 9-8 defeat of the Black Knights during second-day action at the Houston Classic.
The Black Knights (0-3) recorded a team-high 12 hits and eight runs with sophomore Kasey McCravey going 3-for-2 with a home run driving in a pair of runs and scoring twice. Freshman Alee Rashenskaswas 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run as four Black Knights recorded multiple hits.
Army took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior Amanda Nguyen, 2-for-4, who led off with a double to left center field, scored on a throwing error by the pitcher, but starter Hannah Welch left runners at second and third.
SFA exploded for five runs on five hits, opening with a go-ahead two-run homer, off starter Braetana Roy in the top of the second inning to pull ahead 5-1. Freshman Kristen West(0-1) took over the circle and got the first batter she faced to ground out for the third out. West held SFA off the scoreboard over the next two innings as Army chipped away and retook the lead.
Senior Alex Gaff'ssacrifice fly in the bottom of the third delivered McCravey, who singled, moved to second on a throw home and stole third, as Army drew to 5-2.
The Black Knights exploded for five runs in the fourth inning with freshman Caroline Smithigniting that rally with a leadoff triple that chased starter Hannah Welch. Reliever Bailey Buchanan didn't fare too well as Army collected four runs on four hits off her in the five batters she faced to pull in front 7-5.
Freshman Tyler McKinney's infield single delivered Smith for the first run. Nguyen reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and crossed on Rashenskas' RBI double. Senior April Ortenzo (2-for-4) followed with an RBI single as Army tied the score 5-5.
McCravey, a first-team Patriot League all-star last year and preseason pick in 2014, ripped a two-run homer that snapped the tie as Army pulled ahead 7-5 in chasing Buchanan as Lewis took over the circle and ended Army's rally with a strikeout.
SFA roughed up West in the fifth inning with four runs as the Ladyjacks retook the lead 9-7 after ripping a two-run double off freshman reliever Rachael Dehlingerwith two outs.
Army hung tough and capitalized on a pair of errors in the fifth inning with Rashenskas singling home a run with the tying run thrown out at home plate.
Lewis retired six of the next seven batters she faced, with the other reaching on an error, to hold off Army. Dehlinger was touched for just one hit over the 2.1 innings she pitched.
The Black Knights take on host Houston, who they lost to 7-5 last year at the NCAA Austin Regionals.
