WEST POINT, N.Y. -
The Army women's soccer team's 2-1 come-from-behind midweek overtime win over Holy Cross kept alive its chances for a Patriot League Tournament berth, and a win Saturday at Lafayette will tighten its hold in the battle for one of the two remaining spots among six postseason bids. Navy (7-0-0), BU (6-1-0), American (4-2-1) and Colgate (4-2-1) have all clinched berths.
The Black Knights (6-7-3, 2-3-2 PL) moved into sixth place with eight points following Wednesday's victory with senior midfielder Joey Molacek scoring the tying goal and game winner, the latter with just five seconds remaining in the second overtime period, as Army snapped loose from a five-game conference winless streak.
Teams are still jockeying for the final two berths to the tournament with Bucknell (3-3-1), currently in fifth place with 10 points, looking to clinch Saturday when it hosts Holy Cross (2-5-0). No teams have yet been eliminated, but an Army win against Lafayette (0-6-1) will eliminate the Leopards and give the Black Knights 11 points and a stronger hold onto sixth place.
Holy Cross' loss to Army and Lehigh's 2-0 loss to Navy Wednesday dropped both into seventh place in the conference standings with 2-5-0 marks and six points. If both suffer losses or tie this weekend, the Crusaders to Bucknell and Lehigh to Colgate (4-2-1), and if Army wins its match with Lafayette, the Black Knights would clinch a berth.
In that scenario, Army would have 11 points heading into its final league match, while Lehigh and Holy Cross would have just six or seven points and could not overcome the Black Knights as the most either could garner would be ten.
In the bottom half of the standings, Loyola (1-5-1) has four points and Lafayette (1-6-0) has three heading into their final two matches, and the most points either could compile are 10 and nine, respectively. A loss by either this weekend would eliminate them from contention with the Leopards taking on Army Saturday and the Greyhounds visiting unbeaten Navy on Sunday.
Head Army coach Marcia McDermott is not looking past this weekend. "We are going to take it just one game at a time and focus on our next match, which is Lafayette, and getting prepared for that game and going out and performing,"
Army has scored 18 goals this season with Kimberly An the leader with five goals and three assists for 13 points followed by Molacek with four goals for eight points and Katie Holder next with three goals and an assist for seven points. Seven Army players scored multiple goals.
An and Holder rank first and second in the league with 57 and 49 shots, respectively. An continues to rank among the league's leaders in scoring as she is tied for second place in points and shares fourth place in goals. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Cassalia has four solo shutouts and shared the other for a 1.00 goals against average. She recorded four saves in the Holy Cross win to boost her total to 51.
Though Lafayette lists last in the Patriot League with just three points and a 1-6-0 mark, the Leopards have scored 13 goals, have seven players who tallied goals, including four with multiple tallies, while defensively posting four shutouts, and 1.36 goals against average. Jaclyn Giordano and Kaelin King lead Lafayette with three goals and seven points each with Giordano the leader in game winners with three. In goal, Danielle Sedillo shows 1.36 goals against average and four shutouts.
Army has recorded 262 shots with 103 on goal, posted 18 goals and took 96 corner kicks. Lafayette has recorded 121 shots, 59 on goal, has scored 13 goals and earned 52 corner kicks.
The Black Knights, who hold a 19-2-2 advantage in the all-time series with the Leopards, are unbeaten in the last six games to include a 2-0 victory last year.
