Box Score

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast added a pair of second half goals in its 3-0 defeat of Army under hot and humid conditions Sunday afternoon en route to capturing its own Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic  after blanking two teams (the Black Knights and Tennessee Martin) that went to the NCAA Tournament last year. The Eagles defeated UT Martin 1-0 in an opening round match Friday night.

The loss snapped Army's modest three-match unbeaten streak as the Black Knights slipped to 2-2-1, while FGCU improved to 2-2-1.

"Florida Gulf Coast battled better than we did though the tough weather conditions today and had a little more push," stated Army head coach Stefanie Golan, whose team finished 1-1 at the tournament. "We will make a few changes in our training schedule as we head to Saint Louis University (Mo.) this Friday. We have a great opportunity to focus on that game as we look to come back.

Danielle Faller opened the scoring for the Eagles in the 33rd minute with a header just inside the left corner of the net off Kathleen Hunter's free kick for a 1-0 halftime lead.

FGCU, which had three corner kicks in the first half along with four shots, enjoyed an 8-2 shot advantage over Army in the second half. Amber McCall keyed the second half scoring when she added an insurance goal just 1:41 into that period and assisted on Jessica Swartzentruber's late tally with 31 seconds remaining in the game.

The Black Knights, in the middle of a four-game road slate, head to Missouri this weekend to take on Saint Louis University on Sept. 11. They close out their road trip closer to home when Army visits Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y., on Sept. 18 followed by a home match two days (Sept. 20) later at Clinton Field against Hartford.

Army's women soccer team will host a clinic for both boys' and girls' Tuesday evening, Sept. 8, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. prior to the men's soccer match against Marist at 7 p.m. For information and to pre-register call (845) 938-0707 or e-mail Scott Robson (scott.robson@usma.edu).

NOTES: Sophomores Deanna Clegg and Ashleigh Sheets lead the Black Knights in scoring with four and three points, respectively ... both have a game winner ... the Black Knights have three shutouts this season and also have been blanked three times ... 24 of Army's 54 shots have been on goal ... Army was held to a season-low four shots in the loss to FGCU, while a season-high 19 were recorded against NJIT.
