Junior guard Anna Simmers led Army with 18 points, but the Black Knights let a 10-point lead slip away in the second half in a 70-60 loss at Pennsylvania on Saturday night. The non-conference women's basketball contest took place at the historic Palestra.
Junior guard Molly Yardley was the only other Black Knight in double-figure scoring with 13 points. Junior guard Liz Benedict and sophomore guard/forward Jen Hazlett chipped in with nine and seven points, respectively. Army (6-5) shot 34 percent (19-of-56) for the game and stretched its losing streak to three games.
Three Penn players finished in double figures, including Kara Bonenberger and Alyssa Baron with 21 and 20 points, respectively. The Quakers moved to 5-2 on the season.
Army out-rebounded Penn by a 40-34 margin. Hazlett and Simmers each grabbed seven boards.
Army led by 10 (26-16) with 5:31 remaining in the first half and held a 31-29 edge at the break. Penn proceeded to out-score the Black Knights 41-29 in the second half. The Quakers then closed the half riding a 13-5 run to close the gap.
A Baron jumper on the Quakers first possession of the second half tied the score at 31-all and Army would not lead again. Penn led by as many as 13 points twice midway through the second half.
The Black Knights break for TEE (Term-End Exams) Week and will not return to the court until Dec. 20 at Arizona State. It will mark the team's longest road trip of the season and the first meeting between the two programs.
Game Notes: Liz Benedict started for the fourth-straight game ... head coach Dave Magarity returned to his hometown of Philadelphia ...
