CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - In the fourth edition of the Patriot League Women’s Basketball Weekly Awards, Army swept both honors as senior Anna Simmers was tabbed Player of the Week and Kelsey Minato was named Rookie of the Week. The certificates are the first of the year for both Simmers and Minato, while Minato’s newcomer honor is the third by a Black Knight this season.
Simmers averaged a team-high 21 points through victories over Columbia on Nov. 28 and Yale on Dec. 1. The senior had 18 points against the Lions to go along with eight rebounds, before registering a game-high 24 points against the Bulldogs.
Simmers also bolstered the defensive effort for Army against Yale, which came into the game averaging over 70 points. Simmers and the Black Knight ‘D’ held the Bulldogs to a season-low 47 points as the Anchorage, Alaska, native was credited with a season-high five steals.
Minato, who has been a steady contributor for Army from the point guard position, averaged 11 points and five rebounds per game. Minato was a cool 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, bumping her season average to 81.3 percent. The freshman play caller averaged a team-best 39.5 minutes per game while hitting two of Army’s three made three pointers last week. Minato joins classmate Aimee Oertner (Nov. 12; Nov. 19) as Army's Patriot League Rookie of the Week honorees this season.
The clean sweep of the conference’s weekly accolades is the fifth in Army history dating back to the league’s inaugural season in 1990-91. The most recent Black Knight duo to reign in the weekly certificates was Rookie Erin Anthony and Player Cara Enright back on Dec. 17, 2007. The other three Army tandems to sweep the Patriot League awards are: Enright (R) and Alex McGuire (P) on 1/23/06; Katie Macfarlane (R) and Therese Kelley (P) on 2/26/01; and Karen Guenter (R) and Kim Kawamoto (P) on 12/16/90.
Minato, Simmers and the rest of the Black Knights will hit the road this week for a pair of games, beginning Tuesday at Manhattan and followed by Friday at Rider. Tipoff for both games is slated for 7 p.m. Army is 4-0 on the road this season and 7-1 overall for its best start since 2000-01.
