Army women's basketball sophomore Kelsey Minato was honored as the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for her performances in a pair of Patriot League Tournament games last week. The AAA Athlete of the Week recognition marks Minato's fifth of the season and seventh of her career.
Minato finished with 14 points in Army's 68-55 win over American in the Patriot League Quarterfinals on March 10. The sophomore went 5-of-9 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw stripe, while also adding three assists to help the Black Knights advance to their fifth Patriot League title game.
The Huntington Beach, Calif., native netted a Patriot League Championship game-record 31 points on March 15, while going 10-of-18 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the foul line, to send Army past Holy Cross, 68-58, and into the NCAA Tournament for the second time as a Division I program (2006). Minato was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, and contributed five rebounds and three assists. Minato was named the Patriot League Tournament MVP after averaging 23.7 points per game in three tournament games.
Minato enters the week as the nation's fifth-leading free-throw shooter (92.7 percent), and ranks 21st nationally with 21.8 points per game. The sophomore increased her double-digit scoring streak to a conference-best 48 games after a pair of double-digit showings last week.
Army (25-7) will play in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on either Saturday, March 22 or Sunday, March 23. The opponent, location and date of the Black Knights' opening round game will be determined during the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament Selection Show that will air on ESPN at 7 p.m. tonight (March 17).
