Jan. 6, 2014

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Sophomore Kelsey Minatowas named the Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Army women's basketball team begin 2-0 in the conference. Minato also earned Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors for her efforts.

Minato's Patriot League Player of the Week accolade is the second of the season and fourth of her career. The AAA recognition marks her third of the season and fifth of her career.

Minato extended her double-digit scoring streak to 29 games after last week, while raising her scoring average to a Patriot League-best 20.1 points per game. Minato finished with 21 points, while converting a program-record 14 free-throws in a 66-49 win over Lafayette on Jan. 2. The sophomore went 14-of-15 from the free-throw-line, and also grabbed four rebounds while playing in 34 minutes against the Leopards.

Minato followed up her 21-point performance against Lafayette by netting a career-high 29 points on 10-of-22 shooting during a 66-62 overtime win at Loyola on Jan. 5. Minato scored 19 points in the second half, including the game-tying bucket with 21 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, bringing Army back from a 10-point halftime deficit. In the extra session, she closed the game on a personal 6-0 run to seal the come-from-behind victory.

After shooting a combined 19-for-21 on free-throws last week, Minato stands fourth nationally in free-throw percentage (.936). Minato is also the Patriot League's fifth-most accurate three-point shooter, converting 41.8 percent (38-of-91) of her attempts from long range.

The Black Knights (10-3, 2-0 PL) return to Christl Arena on Wednesday night to take on Lehigh at 7 p.m., before beginning a season-long three-game road trip with contests at Navy (Jan. 11), Holy Cross (Jan. 15) and Bucknell (Jan. 18).
