WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Juniors Molly Yardley (16 points) and Anna Simmers (14 points), along with sophomore Jen Hazlett (13 points), combined for 43 points as the Army women's basketball team opened the 2011-12 with a convincing 70-46 victory over visiting Wagner on Friday night at Christl Arena.
Yardley's 16 points led all players and shot 2-of-3 from three-point range. Making her first career start, Simmers scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half. The Anchorage, Alaska, native added seven rebounds and five assists in a solid all-around effort. Hazlett's 13 points came on a 6-of-7 effort from the field, while she contributed six boards and three steals.
Army (1-0) started its youngest lineup in sixth-year head coach Dave Magarity's tenure. Rookie forward Olivia Schretzman totaled seven points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Freshman point guard Janelle Travis shot 2-of-4 from the floor and totaled five points.
"We had two freshmen in the starting lineup tonight," Magarity, who notched his 399th career victory on Friday night, said. "I don't remember any time in my career starting two freshmen. Actually, I do remember, and they weren't very good years. You can't say enough about Schretzman and Travis, and Simmers is going to be a big difference maker for us.
"This is one of those teams that can continue to improve and hopefully come up with some more surprises as the year goes on," he noted.
The Black Knights shot 43.8 percent (28-of-64) from the field and on the battle of the boards, 44-32. Wagner (0-1) shot 32.1 percent (17-of-53) for the game.
Army jumped out to an 11-6 lead on a Hazlett steal and transition jumper at the 11:07 mark. Hazlett got Army going and started a 8-0 Black Knight run, which also featured points from Hazlett, Schretzman, junior guard Liz Benedict and sophomore Jessica Waggoner.
That run was enough to do the damage for the visiting Seahawks. With 4:04 remaining in the opening half, the Black Knights pushed their lead to 28-8 on a Hazlett layup and led 35-15 at the break.
Army's largest lead came less than two minutes into the second half when a Travis layup gave the Black Knights a comfortable 29-point cushion (44-15). Army led by at least 20 points from there.
Wagner's Kanifa Hicks and Shawn-Marie Heiliger paced the Seahawks with 10 points apiece. Chanez Robinson totaled nine rebounds.
Army, which plays five of its first six games at home, is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 13, against Seton Hall at Christl Arena. A 1 p.m. tipoff is scheduled.
