Navy 74, Army 64
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Kelsey Minato finished with a game-high 25 points for the Army women's basketball team during a 74-64 Patriot League setback to service-academy rival Navy on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The Black Knights fall to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference after the defeat, while the Midshipmen improve to 12-3 and 4-0.
With her 25 points, Minato extended her Patriot League-leading double-digit scoring streak to 31 contests. The sophomore scored at least 20 points for the eighth time this season, and has hit the plateau in six of her last eight outings.
Minato went 8-of-18 from the floor and 7-of-7 on free-throws, while chipping in seven rebounds and six assists for Army. Senior Jen Hazlett shot 7-of-19 from the field, totaling 20 points and six boards, while junior Olivia Schretzman contributed eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore Brianna Johnson finished with seven points and four rebounds, and classmate Aimee Oertner recorded five boards and three blocks.
Navy senior Jade Geif nearly matched Minato's stat line, as she posted 24 points and seven rebounds to lead the Midshipmen, while classmate Kara Pollinger added 19 points, five rebounds and eight assists. Geif and Pollinger finished 8-of-8 and 6-of-6 from the free-throw-line, respectively, as Navy outshot Army 24 -10 on free-throws. Junior Chloe Stapleton registered 10 points and four boards, and senior Alix Membreno tallied nine points, five boards and six assists despite falling into early foul trouble.
The Black Knights raced out to an 11-4 start in the opening 2:05, thanks to offensive contributions from four players, including Schretzman, who netted four during the stretch. Geif converted a jumper with 9:57 left in the first half to cap a 9-0 run for the Midshipmen to giving the hosts their first advantage of the game. Army used a 10-3 run to move in front 21-16 with 7:27 left in the frame, but Navy answered with a 16-4 run over the ensuing 5:32 to take command of a 32-25 advantage. Minato and Hazlett each added two points in the final 1:55 of the stanza, with the hosts outscoring the Black Knights 5-4 during that span.
The Midshipmen extended their lead to 10 with a lay-in 32 seconds into in the second half before Hazlett and Schretzman scored during a 5-0 Army run that cut the lead to five at the 17:01 mark. Navy outscored the visitors 12-7 during a 6:36 stretch to go back in front by 10, but the Black Knights once again used a 5-0 run to cut their deficit to five and 51-46 with 8:15 left in the period. Navy didn't let Army get any closer though, largely due to its performance from the free-throw-stripe. Over the last 7:58 of the contest, the Midshipmen converted 16-of-19 free-throws without allowing the Black Knights to come within fewer than five points for the remainder of the contest.
After a 9-2 Navy run increased the lead to 60-48, Hazlett scored five straight points to spark a 7-0 Army run to again bring the visitors to within five with 3:04 left. Hazlett posted 10 of her 16 second-half points in the game's last 4:31, while Minato contributed four, but the Black Knights were unable to sustain a definitive comeback attempt to cut into the Navy lead over the remaining minutes.
The Black Knights continue their season-long three-game road trip with a contest against Holy Cross on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The match-up is scheduled for 7 p.m.
