WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior Jen Hazlett notched a season-best 25 points, while tying a career high of 12 rebounds to lead the Army women's basketball team to a 74-63 win over Lehigh in Patriot League action on Wednesday evening at Christl Arena. The Black Knights improve to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference following the victory, while the Mountain Hawks slip to 8-6 and 1-2.
Hazlett added a season-high-tying six assists, while shooting 10-for-17 from the field and 3-of-6 from long range. Sophomore Kelsey Minato, who entered the game with a Patriot League-best 20.1 points per game, scored in double figures for the 30th consecutive contest, as she finished with 17 points and five boards. Junior Olivia Schretzman reached her second-highest scoring output of the season by recording 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting and a 4-of-4 showing on free-throws, while sophomore Brigette Ocran and freshman Stephanie Geyer each chipped in four points off the bench.
Junior Sarah Williams paced Lehigh with 13 points, while sophomore Kerry Kinek, the conference's second-leading scorer, posted 11 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Elizabeth Sharlow finished with eight points and five boards, and freshman Lexi Martins totaled seven points.
The Black Knights opened the game on an 8-2 run that was capped by an Oertner lay-in 3:49 into the game. Army built its lead to 11, at 17-6, after Hazlett hit a jumper, scoring her eighth point of the game with 13:20 left in the frame. The hosts didn't let Lehigh come within fewer than seven points for the rest of the half, building their lead to as many as 17 at the 3:11 mark. Hazlett and Minato each netted eight points, including two three-pointers apiece, during an 8:38 span to give the Black Knights the 17-point cushion, at 41-24. The Mountain Hawks outscored Army 4-1 over the last 2:55 of the first half, with the Black Knights taking a 42-28 lead into the break.
After nearly reaching a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds in the first half, Hazlett picked up the second half in a similar fashion, accounting for four of Army's first six points to begin the stanza. Trailing 48-31 after 1:48 of action in the second half, the Mountain Hawks quickly chipped away at the Black Knight lead, using a 16-4 over a 6:19 span to pull to within five at 52-47. Six Lehigh players scored during the run, including Sharlow and senior Hilary Weaver, who each recorded four during the stretch.
Army registered six of the game's next eight points to momentarily halt Lehigh's comeback, but the Mountain Hawks received lay-ups from O'Reilly and Williams to once again pull to within five, this time with 7:34 left in regulation. Ocran converted a lay-in with 5:49 left to cap a 6-1 run by the Black Knights. Lehigh attempted to regain its early-half momentum, but shot just 2-of-8 from the field in the final 5:33, as Army outscoring the Mountain Hawks 10-9 down the stretch.
The Black Knights head to Navy on Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 1:30 p.m. contest against the Midshipmen before continuing a season-long three-game road trip with match-ups at Holy Cross (Jan. 15) and Bucknell (Jan. 18).
