Bryant Rallies To 64-54 Win Over Army

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Bryant held Army without a field goal over the final 4:12 and closed the game riding an 11-2 run as the Bulldogs picked up a 64-54 victory over visiting Army on Tuesday afternoon at Chase Athletic Center.

Army led 36-34 at the half and sat on a 51-50 edge with 5:26 to play before Bryant took over for good. The Bulldogs scored their final six points from the free throw line in the closing minute to help seal the win.

A game of runs all afternoon, the contest featured seven ties and seven lead changes. Neither team took a double-digit lead until Bryant did so twice in the final 33 seconds.

Army (6-9) dropped its seventh game in a row, while Bryant (8-5) extended its win streak to four games and finished the non-conference slate with a 3-1 record against Patriot League opponents.

Junior guard Anna Simmers and freshman forward Olivia Schretzman paced Army with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Schretzman added a team-high seven rebounds, while junior Jen Hazlett and freshman Ciara Jackson totaled six caroms each. Bryant won the battle of the boards, 48-33. Hazlett scored eight points, while junior Liz Benedict and rookie Janelle Travis added six points apiece.

Naana Ankoma-Mensa recorded the game's lone double-double, leading the Bulldogs with 15 points and 14 rebounds. She scored all 15 points in the first half.

Army shot 35 percent (20-of-58) from the field, including five three-point baskets. The Black Knights were 9-of-13 from the free throw line. Bryant shot 38 percent (21-of-55) for the game, hit seven three-pointers and was 15-of-25 from the charity stripe.

The Black Knights opened the game on a high note, stealing the ball on each of Bryant's first two possessions. The Bulldogs, however, went on to take a 13-9 lead with 12:47 on the clock. The Black Knights heated up from there, using a 10-5 run which featured eight Simmers points, to go ahead 19-18 with exactly 10 minutes to play in the first half.

The teams continued to play back-and-forth the remainder of the half. Bryant took its largest lead of the half, 28-23, with 6:17 remaining. The Black Knights retaliated with a 13-4 run as they took their biggest lead of the half, 36-32. Back-to-back Hazlett three-point buckets capped the surge, the second scored with 2:40 to go. Army would not score the rest of the way, while giving up a Bryant layup with 1:46 to play as the Black Knights entered the locker room with a 36-34 edge.

After Army scored on its firsts two possessions of the second half to extend its lead to 41-34, Bryant used an 11-0 run over the next 4:23 to retake a 45-41 lead with 13:17 remaining in the contest.

Army's Travis and Jackson accounted for seven of the next eight points in the game, helping Army to a 48-46 lead at the 8:51 mark.

The teams went on to tie the score twice over the final eight minutes, the final coming at 50-all with 7:21 to play. Neither team scored over the next two minutes. Simmers sank one of two free throws to give Army a 51-50 with 5:26 to go. Whittington nailed the first of two three-point baskets over the final five minutes as Bryant took the lead and did not relinquish the rest of the way.

Tuesday's game marked the Black Knights' final non-conference test of the season as all eight Patriot League teams open conference play on Saturday, Jan. 7. Army travels to Bucknell for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Sojka Pavilion.

Game Notes: Army's starting five remained the same for the second game in a row and featured Molly Yardley, Jen Hazlett, Anna Simmers, Jessica Waggoner and Olivia Schretzman ... Army led at the half (36-34) for the first time in three games ... Anna Simmers became the first Army player to foul out of a game this season ... Bryant out-scored Army in the paint, 24-14, and scored 23 points off 18 Black Knight turnovers ... the Bulldogs committed 20 miscues from which Army netted 14 points.
