In Abbey's first four years at the Academy, he acted as the head basketball coach for the women's basketball junior varsity program.

This past summer, Abbey coached the Open Women's Team at the Empire State Games.

Prior to his arrival at West Point, Abbey served as the girls' basketball and softball head coach at Hinsdale High School in upstate New York, earning his master's degree in special education from St. Bonaventure University in 1998.

Before heading the Hinsdale program, he broke into the collegiate ranks at Geneseo State University where he served as an assistant women's basketball coach for one year.

A 1984 graduate of the University of Buffalo, where he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education, Abbey launched his coaching career at Lake Shore High School as the boys' varsity basketball head coach and girls' softball head coach. He also shouldered duties as one of the school's physical education instructors.

In addition to his coaching stints, Abbey's resume includes a wealth of summer camp experience. He has served on the staff of the U.S. Naval Academy Basketball Camp in Annapolis, Md., and the Lehigh Volleyball Camp in Bethlehem, Pa.

He currently holds the position of special education teacher at nearby Highland Falls Middle School.

Abbey and his wife Sherri, the Army women's head coach, reside at West Point.
