WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army junior wrestler Jordan Thomewas named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday after helping the Black Knights to a fourth-place finish at the Oklahoma-Gold Classic over the weekend.
Thome, Army's lone returning NCAA qualifier from a year ago, placed runner-up at 133 pounds to lead the Black Knights to their best finish at the prestigious tournament since taking fourth in 2007.
The Troy, Ohio, native began his run through the 133-pound draw by pinning Brockport's Mike Leonard in 1 minute, 8 seconds. After pinning Maryland's Ken Collado in 4:15 to reach the semifinals, Thome took a 6-0 decision from Rutgers' Danny White to advance to the title bout. He lost a 9-0 major decision to 12th-ranked Jordan Keller of Oklahoma in the championship match.
Thome, the 19th- ranked wrestler in the nation at 133 pounds, according to the latest InterMat rankings, is off to a fast start to the season. He currently shows a 5-2 record and tops the squad with three pins.
Army returns to its tournament slate on Saturday, Nov. 19, when the Black Knights travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to compete in the Body Bar Invitational.
