WEST POINT, N.Y. -
The Army wrestling team will determine its early season lineup on Friday, Oct. 25, when the squad hosts its annual Black-Gold scrimmage at West Point's Arvin Gymnasium. The match, which is open to the public and is free of charge, is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
All 10 weight classes will be contested on Friday, with the winners earning a chance to be part of the team's lineup when the Black Knights kick off the 2013-14 season with a road match at Franklin and Marshall on Saturday, Nov. 2.
The Black-Gold match will provide Army wrestling fans their first opportunity to see the Black Knights in action. The Black and Gold lineups were determined following a series of wrestle-offs that took place during the course of the week.
Army fourth-year head coach Joe Heskett will observe the proceedings, while assistant coach Brad Pataky will guide the Black team, and assistant coach Enock Francois will lead the Gold team. Honorary coaches for the match will be retired LTC Todd Messitt and Commandant of Cadets, Brigadier General Richard D. Clarke.
Senior Nathan Santhanam and junior Hunter Wood will go head-to-head in the 125-pound bout. Santhanam picked up one win in limited duty last season, while Wood totaled 13 wins as a member of the starting lineup and took sixth at the EIWA Championships.
The 133-pound match will feature sophomore Justin Seim and freshman Logan Everett. Both competitors are relative newcomers, as Seim earned one victory, missing most of the season due to injury, and Everett has yet to wrestle collegiately.
Freshman Mark Marchetti will face senior captain Tyler Rauenzahn in the 141-pound match in what looks to be one of the most competitive bouts of the night. Rauenzahn posted an overall mark of 14-10 last season while placing second at the All-Academy Championships.
Sophomore Shane Connolly and senior Ryan Bilyeu will meet in the 149-pound bout. Both wrestlers will be eager to prove themselves in competition after missing large parts of the 2012-13 season.
The 157-pound match will be contested between senior Paul Hancock and sophomore Javier Rodriguez. Hancock led the team with 32 overall wins and 13 dual-match victories a season ago. He also took third place at the EIWA Championships and was one of four Black Knights to qualify for the NCAAs. Rodriguez finished with nine wins as a freshman.
Senior Alex Dahl and junior Chandler Smith will meet in the 165-pound match. Smith compiled a 5-5 record last season, while Dahl missed the majority of the year due to injury.
At 174 pounds, senior Alex Smith and sophomore Brian Harvey will go head-to-head. Harvey, who saw some time in the starting lineup as a freshman, had 13 wins overall and went 4-4 in dual matches, and Smith did not compete in any events because of injury.
Senior captain Ryan Tompkins and sophomore Nathan Dow will meet in the 184-pound match-up. Tompkins notched 14 victories last season while tying for second on the team with six pins. Dow finished with one win in limited action as a freshman.
Freshman Mason Kumashiro and sophomore Bryce Barnes will compete at 197 pounds. Barnes faces the newcomer after finishing second on the team with 25 wins last year. Barnes placed second at the Oklahoma-Gold Classic and the All-Academy Championships in 2012-13 before taking fourth at the EIWAs and earning qualification for the NCAA Championships.
The heavyweight bout will be contested between junior Stephen Snyder and freshman David Farr. Snyder picked up nine wins as a sophomore, and Friday's match will be Farr's first taste of college competition.
Following Friday's Black-Gold match, Army will continue to prepare for its season-opening dual match at Franklin and Marshall on Saturday, Nov. 2.
